Skatopia

Opened July 1978

Closed September 1982

Skatopia was situated on the corner of Gt. South and Wiri Station roads in Manukau and was best skatepark in NZ for its time. For about a year or so the park thrived, the highlight coming with the hosting of the National Champs in February 1979. Top US pro skater Chris Strople attended as a judge and top honours were won by Grant Macredie. By about 1980 skating had started to decline, the park had financial trouble and bmx took over the place. By 1982 the park's name had officially changed to the Motogard BMX Superbowl before closing later that year. The area is now home to Rainbows End Adventure Park.

The park is also celebrated in Andy Moore's film "No More Heroes", a film on the history of skateboarding in NZ.

The more time goes by the more I realise how blessed we were to have this place.
